Nations League roundup: Mbappe scored the only goal as France edged Sweden

There was plenty of action to enjoy this weekend with a couple of red cards and a few penalties in the Nations League.

A couple of stars were also missing from the action notably Cristiano Ronaldo for Portugal.

We bring to you the roundup for all Saturday’s Nations League fixtures.

Portugal 4-1 Croatia

Fernando Santos’ side were without talisman Cristiano Ronaldo against Croatia due to foot infection, but still had Diogo Jota, Bernardo Silva, Joao Felix and Bruno Fernandes causing their opponents all sorts of problems.

Croatia’s backline was swarmed throughout the first half as Portugal stormed the visitor’s goal, hitting the woodwork thrice before Joao Cancelo finally got the opener in spectacular fashion in the 41st minute.

Diogo Jota added a second just before the hour after hitting the post in the first half – a well deserved goal and his first for the Selecao and Joao Felix made it three 20 minutes from time.

Bruno Petkovic’s scored a late consolation which did little to take away from a routine win, which was sealed by Andre Silva in the dying stages of injury time.

Denmark 0-2 Belgium

Jason Denayer and Dries Mertens scored in each half as Belgium recorded a 2-0 victory over Denmark at Copenhagen in their Nations League opening fixture.

Belgium were missing several key players, with Kevin De Bruyne missing out after welcoming a new child, while Eden Hazard and Thibaut Courtois named on the bench.

Denmark entered Saturday’s Group A2 opener unbeaten in 15 games since September 2018 but were swept aside at the Parken Stadium by goals in either half.

Denayer profited from some slack defending to guide Mertens’ corner inside nine minutes, and Belgium made their chances count as Mertens sealed the win 14 minutes from time as Belgium moved top of the group level on points with England after the first round of games.

Sweden 0-1 France

Kylian Mbappe was on the scoresheet but Antoine Griezmann failed to convert from the spot as France struggled past Sweden 1-0 at the Friends Arena to record a win in their Nations League opener.

Mbappe scored France’s only effort on target in the 41st minute of the match, squeezing the ball through the tighest of angles between Sweden goalkeeper Robin Olsen and the near post.

Sweden made a late attempts to push for an equaliser before Victor Lindelof was caught out by the pace of club team-mate Anthony Martial, but Griezmann smashed the resulting penalty over with the final kick of the game.

Iceland 0-1 England

Raheem Sterling was England’s saviour as a slow Nations League match with Iceland exploded into penalty frenzy in the final minutes, with Gareth Southgate’s men scraping 1-0 victory.

Harry Kane had an early goal wrongly ruled out but it soon became a story of frustration for England against the side who famously disgraced them against the odds at Euro 2016.

Kyle Walker was sent off for a second bookable offence, but Sterling won a spot kick in the final minute when Sverrir Ingason – who also received a second booking – handled his shot following a right-wing delivery.

The Manchester City forward calmly rolled his effort home before a further stoppage-time drama.

Joe Gomez clumsily brought down substitute Holmbert Fridjonsson in the box, although Birkir Bjarnason opted for blazed woefully high and wide to spare England’s blushes.

James Ward-Prowse, Phil Foden and Mason Greenwood all made their first-team debuts for England with the latter coming on as a substitute.
