Lichtsteiner retires from football

Stephan Lichtsteiner has decided not to feature in the Euro 2021, and has announced his retirement from football.

The former Juventus and Arsenal defender has decided to retire from football this evening.

The 36-year-old had initially planned to feature for Switzerland at the Euro 2020 before ending his football career, but with the Covid-19 enforced break forcing the competition to be moved to 2021, he has decided not to continue playing.

Lichtsteiner spent the 2019/20 season with German side Augsburg, playing 20 games in the Bundesliga as he helped them finish 15th.

“The plan was for me to play in the Euros, and then retire afterwards,” Lichtsteiner, told a Swiss press conference.

“However, after UEFA’s decided to push the European Championships by a further year, it dawned on me that I couldn’t continue.

“As a footballer, the length of my career has been glorious, filled with trophies and nights I will remember forever.”

Lichtsteiner has played in five major competitions for Switzerland, featuring in the 2008 and 2016 European Championships, and the 2010, 2014, 2018 World cup, earning a total of 108 caps for his country.

“I am going to miss the thrill of every tournament I’ve played in. I am proud of representing my nation on the global stage.

“I am proud of being among the elite group of people who make more than 100 appearances for their countries. It is a big honor for me.”

Lichtsteiner’s most successful period of his career was his seven year spell with Juventus. Where he won the Serie A title seven consecutive times, the Copa Italia four times, and reaching the Champions League finals twice.

“The Best period of my career was with Juventus. I wan a massive fourteen trophies in just seven years.” he said to the media.

Lichtsteiner joined Augsburg after just one season with Arsenal, and has hinted his desire to start a coaching career amid other news of a career in economics.
