Luis Suarez completed his move to Atlético Madrid on Thursday and we take a look at the impact he would have on the team via Opta stats.

Atlético Madrid should be expecting an immediate improvement following the arrival of Luis Suarez from Barcelona.

A source from Sky Sports has confirmed Luis Suarez’s move to Atlético after the player failed to secure a move to Juventus.

Atlético finalised a €6m move from Barcelona for Luis Suarez on Wednesday after Suarez has enjoyed six years of trophies with the Catalan giants.

As part of Ronald Koeman’s rebuilding process, Barcelona have sold of the numerous ageing stars on their unwanted list.

And with stats from Opta data, we would be assessing the instant rewards Diego Simeone should be receiving.

Immediate improvement for Atletico

While Atlético were chasing Suarez, it’s important to to note that Atlético allowed Morata to join Juventus this summer.

Diego Costa has also been told he is free to leave if he wanted to. So people would be surprised why Atlético chose to out faith in a Suarez who was labeled ‘declining’ by Ronald Koeman.

Via Opta data, Suarez scored a LaLiga goal every 125.1 minutes in 2019/20, easily better than Morata (175.3) and Costa (270.2)

Suarez finished the season with 16 goals, almost as many as the Atlético Madrid duo (17) combined. If we take away penalties, Suarez scored 15 to their 13 goals.

And these 16 goals came despite a nasty knee injury that sidelined Suarez for five months at the start of the year, limiting the striker to only 28 appearances in LaLiga last term.

Inspire of the 5 months layoff, Suarez still managed an impressive 63 shots, more than Morata (57) and Costa (32), both of which made 34 and 23 appearances respectively.

Suarez helped Barcelona net a LaLiga record 86 goals last term and Atlético found the net on just 51 occasions.

From a total of 25 big chances, Suarez converted 10, better than Morata’s (10 from 28), but worse tan Costa (5 from 10).

On the contribution side, Suarez provided (eight) assists, more than Morata and Costa combined (six).

The 2019/20 season could have been a better one for Suarez, who struck the post four times in LaLiga.

Only Osasuna playmaker Roberto Torres (six) and Los Blancos forward Karim Benzema (five) hit it more.

Suarez may have been termed declining, but he turned 34 in January, and may not be able to fight at the top for much longer.

This is a player who produced 40 LaLiga goals and 16 assists in 35 LaLiga games while leading a revered ‘MSN’ trident which included Neymar and Messi.

Atlético are a club who have been left heartbroken twice in a UEFA Champions League finals since 2014.

They were most recently knocked out of the same competition at the quarterfinals stage at the hand of Barcelona last season.

Luis Suarez has been very poor in front of goal in the Champions League for two seasons prior to the 2019 Champions League.

Suarez only managed a very poor two goals from 20 Champions League appearances across 2017/18 and 2018/19.

As a matter of fact, the Uruguayan ace only managed to be directly involved in eight goals across those 20 games.

But the veteran improved on his goal tally in the 2019/20 Champions League season with five goals and two assists in just seven appearances.

Morata on the other hand, scored three goals and provided only one assist in eight appearances, while Costa scored none in seven outings.

Suarez converted four out of six big chances, and created an amazing 11 chances. The same amount from Real Madrid superstar Eden Hazard and just two less than PSG hitman Kylian Mbappé.

A lot of things need to change for the better in Atlético Madrid’s pursuit of the Champions League, and luckily, Suarez has rediscovered some form in the last campaign.
