Chelsea have announced the completed transfer of veteran defender Thiago Silva on a one-year deal with the option to extend by a further year.
Chelsea have completed the transfer of Thiago Silva after his departure from Paris Saint-Germain, a day after announcing the £50m signing of Ben Chilwell from Leicester and are putting the finishing touches to their big money move for the Bayer Leverkusen star Kai Havertz.
Frank Lampard has been on the lookout for defensive reinforcements and the opportunity to sign the 35-year-old Thiago Silva, who left Paris Saint-Germain after their loss to Bayern Munich in the Champions League final, was seen as too good to pass.
Chelsea, who have been given a huge summer transfer budget, have offered the Brazil centre-back a one-year deal with the option of an extra 12 months and hope his experience will organize a leaky defence.
Chelsea, who intend to loan out Malang Sarr after signing the 21-year-old French defender to a five-year deal, have been keen to reinforce their backline after conceding 54 goals in the Premier League last season – the most of any side in the top half of the table.
Silva, who turns 36 next month passed his medical in Milan on Thursday, and his class is not in doubt with the Brazilian center-back impressing during PSG’s 1-0 loss to Bayern. Silva who joined the French Champions from Milan in 2012, believes that he is still capable of competing at the highest level and the Blues will hope the veteran will be able to cope with the pace of the Premier League.
Thiago becomes Chelsea’s fifth summer arrival, with Hakim Ziyech, Timo Werner, Ben Chilwell and Malang Sarr already joining the London outfit.
The former Paris Saint-Germain captain leaves the French side after lifting a joint-record seven Ligue 1 titles, five Coupes De la Ligue as well as five Coupes De France.
Thiago Silva made a total of 315 appearances,
including 21 this season as PSG finished the the season with a domestic treble.
Before a successful spell with PSG, Silva enjoyed a three-year stint with AC Milan from 2009-12.
He helped AC Milan lift the 2010-11 Serie A title, emerging as one of the best defenders in the world before being snapped up by PSG.
PSG acquired the center-back for a reported fee of €42 million, becoming the second most expensive defender in the world at the time behind Manchester United’s Rio Ferdinand.
At the international level, Silva has been a focal point for the Brazil senior team throughout the last decade, with 89 caps while scoring seven goals.
Silva has helped win silver and bronze at the Olympics with Brazil while also lifting the 2013 Confederations Cup and the 2019 Copa America trophy on home soil.
In addition, the veteran center-back has been a part of three World Cup squads and has also been to the Copa America on three occasions as well.
Chelsea come into the 2020-21 season after finishing fourth place in the Premier League in Frank Lampard’s debut campaign as manager.
Chelsea will start the Premier League season with a trip to Brighton on September 14.
