John Mikel Obi becomes the fourth-summer signing for Stoke City ahead of the new campaign after Morgan Fox, James Chester and Steven Fletcher.
The Nigerian midfielder joins the Potters on a short term deal and intends to see out his career in the Premier League.
The 33-year old midfielder has been a free agent since March when his contract with Turkish Super Lig side was terminated, which is believed to be due to speaking out against the club for going on with league fixtures in the face of the COVID-19 pandemic.
John Mikel Obi started his European career in Norway in Lyn after arriving from Plateau United in the Nigeria top-flight.
During his spell at the Stamford Bridge, Mikel had a glittering career appearing 370 times and winning a host of trophies including the UEFA Champions League, Europa League, two Premier League titles, three FA Cups and a League Cup.
After making 19 appearances and failing to gain promotion into the Premier League with Middlesbrough in the 2018-19 season. He joined Turkish side Trabzonspor on a two year deal, but left the Super Lig outfit by mutual consent in March after expressing his concerns over the continued league fixtures amid the coronavirus pandemic.
Mikel pulled the curtains on his international career after leading Nigeria to 3rd place at the 2019 African Cup of Nations in Egypt.
He made 91 appearances for the Super Eagles, scoring six times before calling up his time in the national team.
