Manchester United have formally launched a bid for SL Benfica player Florentino Luis. Obviously, they are thought to have also contacted the 20 year old’s agent in January to talk about and display their interests.
The English club are believed to have been scouting the youngster since September. Neighbors City have recently been associated with the prodigy for sometime now.
Prior to Manchester United submitting a bid for the youngster, Manchester City have been believed to have shown interest as far back as April, as they see Florentino to be a long term heir to the departing Fernandinho. Which is to imply the kind of quality he possesses.
The newest news on where he’s headed comes from ESPN, who suggested that Man Utd remain the most interested, amidst the number of other clubs watching him closely.
The likes of Milan, Bayer 04 Leverkusen, Real Betis and even Leeds have also been credited with interest.
According to ESPN, Man Utd officials met with the players agent Bruno Carvalho back in January when the transfer window was open.
“Florentino is definitely one of the most promising defensive midfielders in Europe, so there is so much interest in him right now,” Carvalho said to ESPN.
“There’s been so much news of Milan, but I can say that there’s a lot of rivalry for his signature. With clubs in England, Germany and Spain also monitoring him tightly.”
Florentino’s current contract with Benfica runs until 2024, but ESPN thinks that Benfica may be ready to let the player go on loan with a buy clause. Which is similar to the way Gedson Fernandes was signed from them by Spurs earlier in January.
The youngster’s nickname ‘The Octopus’, was given to him due to the fact that it is difficult to wrestle him off the ball, and his ability to win the ball back.
He has been likened to Chelsea’s N’Golo Kante, and current United right-back Aaron Wan Bissaka.
Manchester United have been mostly known to recruit only British talents. Recent reforms and credible investments have seen the club being able to travel all around the world in search of top talents.
But due to the fact that the player hasn’t played a game for Benfica since November, it may also be that the player’s agent is only looking to spotlight his client and create a market by speaking to ESPN.
