Real Sociedad have completed the signing of former Manchester City playmaker David Silva in a surprise transfer, after the Spaniard decided to end his successful 10-year spell at the Etihad. The 34-year old makes a return to La Liga a decade after leaving Valencia to play in the Premier League, having initially been speculated to sign with Lazio.
The Spaniard has signed a two-year deal which will see him through to the summer of 2022. The former City man had earlier announced intentions to call time on his days at the Manchester club at the end of the campaign. However, he was made to wait longer due to the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic.
Prior to the surprise announcement of his transfer to Real Sociedad, David Silva had been tipped to sign for Serie A side Lazio instead on a three-year deal. However, the deal was not to be, as reports suggest there was a communication breakdown between Silva and the Roman outfit.
The move was a big surprise, such that the Real Sociedad‘s club website crashed moments after the transfer was announced as supporters rushed to find out details about the deal.
The 34-year old arrives on a free transfer after leaving the Citizens. He will the wear the number 21 shirt at the Anoeta stadium, the number previously worn by Martin Odegaard who made an unexpected return to his parent club Real Madrid after his loan spell. The Spaniard is believed to be a like for like replacement for Odegaard.
Manchester City earlier announced on Monday their intention to erect a statue outside the Etihad Stadium in honor of the Spaniard.
Silva, widely regarded as the greatest player to grace the Etihad made 436 appearances for the club in 10 seasons, playing an integral role in the club’s transformation. He won every domestic trophy, lifting four Premier League titles, two FA Cups, five League Cups and three Community Shields in his time at the Etihad.
