Sadio Mane will miss Liverpool’s game against Aston Villa on Sunday after the Senegal international’s COVID-19 test came out positive.
Sadio Mane has tested positive for COVID-19 and is currently in self-isolation, Liverpool have confirmed.
According to the Merseyside club, Mane has displayed minor symptoms and will enter quarantine for the mandated period, making him unavailable for Sunday’s clash with Aston Villa.
The forward becomes the second Liverpool player to have contracted COVID-19, after new signing Thiago Alcantara tested positive on Monday.
Mane was left out of Liverpool’s squad on Thursday night, when Jurgen Klopp’s much-changed side crashed out of the Carabao Cup on Penalties to Arsenal in the fourth-round.
Klopp will hope both affected players return to action after the international break, for the Merseyside derby against Everton on October 17.
As with Thiago, the decision to make the positive test public is down to the player. Liverpool insist the club has followed all necessary COVID-19 steps and protocols, though the news will, certainly, lead to fears of more positive tests.
The news comes as fears of a second wave of the COVID-19 pandemic in the UK grow, with about 7,000 new cases confirmed on Friday, including 66 deaths.
10 new cases were recorded in the Premier League in the latest round of tests. With Manchester City midfielder Ilkay Gundogan and West Ham manager David Moyes having all tested positive in recent weeks, despite strict measures employed by clubs to ensure the minimal risk.
Mane has had a bright start to the new Premier League campaign and has been a pivotal part of the Champions impressive run.
He scored both goals in their 2-0 win over Chelsea and also netted in Monday’s 3-1 victory over Arsenal.
The mandatory isolation means Mane will not feature for his country after the forward was named in Senegal’s squad for their friendlies against Morocco and Mauritania.
Mane’s unavailability against Aston Villa could gift Diogo Jota his first Premier League full debut for Liverpool. The £45 million signing was in the starting XI in the Carabao Cup defeat to the Gunners on Thursday and could now feature on the left at Villa Park.
Liverpool have been handed a boost by the return of Captain Jordan Henderson to training on Friday.
The English man had missed the previous three games due to a thigh problem but was able to take part in a training session and could be in the squad for Sundays fixture.
Liverpool still have injury concerns with Joel Matip, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain and Kostas Tsimikas all out of contention for Sunday’s game, alongside Thiago and Mane.
Sadio Mane’s absence will come as a blow to Fantasy Premier League players all over the world as the forward has been in impressive form since the start of the campaign.
