Manchester United parted with a whooping €9m signing bonus to bring Edison Cavani to Old Trafford in the summer transfer window, sources have revealed.

The Uruguayan striker departed Paris Saint-Germain at the end of last season, having enjoyed a hugely successful seven year stay in the French capital – ultimately usurping Zlatan Ibrahimovic as the club’s all-time leading scorer in the process.

Cavani spent the entire summer on the lookout for a new club, and he reached an agreement with Premier League giants Manchester United in the closing hours of the summer transfer window, penning a one-year long deal with the option to extend for an additional twelve months.

According to the Ian Mc Garry and Duncan Castle’s Transfer Window Podcast, the Old Trafford outfit handed the 33-year-old frontman an eye-watering €9m signing bonus, merely for agreeing to sign for United.

Duncan Castles reportedly made the discovery via contacts at Benfica – who themselves made an effort to sign the striker in the summer – and admitted that he had been persuaded to play in the English top flight as a result of this handsome signing-on bonus.

Cavani will don the historical number seven jersey for the Red Devils, as he hopes to produce the much needed goals to revive their fortunes following a shabby start to the new campaign.

Man Utd have won just one of their three Premier League matches, and were humiliated 6-1 by Jose Mourinho’s Tottenham Hotspur jsut before the international break.

These dismal results prompted the Red Devils to acquire the services of defender Alex Telles from Porto, and Cavani as a free signing.

The ex-Napoli striker poseses one of the best scoring records in Europe over the past decade, with no other player scoring more goals than him since his Palermo debut in 2007, apart from Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi.

The forward scored 200 goals in all competitions during his seven year stay at the French capital, winning six Ligue 1 titles in that period, and claiming the golden boot twice.
