Martin Demichelis believes that although Bayern Munich’s high pressing intensity will offer Paris Saint-Germain some chances, it will help them win on Sunday.
Paris Saint-Germain will find it hard to cope with Bayern Munich’s intensity across the entire 90 minutes of the Champions League final, says Martin Demichelis.
Bayern will be looking to complete a treble at the Estadio da Luz on Sunday, after already winning the Bundesliga and DFB-Pokal. PSG likewise, have the chance to seal an unprecedented quadruple.
The top German outfit have won all of their last 20 games in all competitions and have scored 42 goals in their 10 Champions League matches this campaign.
Demichelis, who won four Bundesliga titles with Bayern Munich as a player, is now coaching their Under-19 team, believes the only reason Bayern will lose on Sunday is if their high attacking tactics allows space for the likes of Mbappé and Neymar to out pace them on the counter.
However, the former center back believes Bayern’s high pressing will be too much to handle for the Ligue 1 holders, as it has for most teams they have beaten this season.
“Bayern are not going to alter their structure and way of playing to suit PSG because they have gone through more difficult opponents this season in different games,” Demichelis told Ole.
“The team takes a lot of risks, like defending with a high line, makes their intentions from the start. The team loves to attack their opponents relentlessly for the entire 90 minutes.
“It is also worthy to note that this tactic can be detrimental at some points in the game, like in the game against Lyon, during the first few minutes.
“This time around, they come up against PSG knowing that Neymar, Mbappe, Di Maria are quality players, and Mbappé is very, very fast, but Bayern will go out to play the same way.
“Generally, I see Bayern as the stronger of the two teams on paper. And they will go on to win the Champions League.”
Demichelis highlighted that Alphonso Davies and David Alaba are by no means slow in Bayern’s backline, while goalkeeper Manuel Neuer provides a formidable last line of defence.
“Bayern can allow themselves to press high because of the speed they have at full-back. Alaba has reinvented himself as a centre-back and is very fast,” said Demichelis.
“[Jerome] Boateng may not have the speed of previous years, but he does have a mental speed due to experience and the great career he’s had.”
He added: “Surely they [PSG] will have some chances but there is also Manuel in the box and he’s proved to be very good physically and in strong form.
“I hope Paris doesn’t get those chances, but because of the way both teams play and the quality of the players in Paris’ attack, they will have some.
“It’s impossible for defenders to always do everything right.”
