PSG advanced to the Champions League Final after Angel Di Maria produced a masterclass scoring one and setting up a further two as the French side eased to a 3-0 win over RB Leipzig
PSG came into this fixture after leaving it late to go past Atalanta in the last round but had less troubles seeing off Julian Nagelsmann’s RB Leipzig on Tuesday.
The Parisians powered to a victory courtesy of goals by Marquinhos, Angel Di Maria and Juan Bernat.
The former who netted the equalizer in the game against Atalanta rising highest to head in Di Maria’s superb delivery in the 11th minute.
The Argentine forward then fired in a low finish following a sublime flick from Neymar after Leipzig goalkeeper Peter Gulacsi had lost posession in a dangerous area to double his side’s tally before the break.
With Kylian Mbappe fit again and Neymar causing all sorts of problems to the Leipzig backline, PSG should have been out of sight before the half time whistle, but the latter hit the post twice – from a clipped finish after being played through by Mbappe then an opportunistic free kick from the right – before narrowly placing a finish just wide the post. The French man could have had a finish of his own but his strike was correctly ruled out after a Neymar handball in the build up.
Leipzig’s best chance came moments before PSG’s second when Yussuf Poulsen lashed wide after he was found by a Dani Olmo cut back.
PSG then sealed their win, booking a place in Sunday’s final as Di Maria set up the third for Juan Bernat to head home – a goal which initially seemed offside but stood as Nordi Mukiele who slipped in the build up, was playing Bernat onside.
The French side make it to their first major European final since the Cup Winners’ Cup in 1997 and their first since the Qatari takeover.
An unprecedented quadruple is also on the cards as they look to add the Champions League to a successful season having won the Ligue 1, Coupe de la Ligue and Coupe de France plus the Trophee des Champions- in perhaps what might be the most famous season in their history.
Key Opta Records
5 – Paris SG are the fifth different French side to appear in the European Cup/Champions League final, with only England (8), Germany and Italy (both 6) having more different finalists than France.
27 – Since his Champions League debut in 2007-08, only Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo (32 each) have had more assists in the competition than Ángel Di María.
34 – No side has ever scored in more consecutive matches in major UEFA competition than Paris Saint Germain’s current run of 34, level with Real Madrid between 2011-2014 in the Champions League.
110 – Paris SG have reached their first ever European Cup/Champions League final; this was their 110th game in the competition – the most matches played by a side before advancing to their first final, surpassing Arsenal’s record of 90 between 1971-2006.
