Mikel Arteta blasts Arsenal players for an “unacceptable” 2-1 Premier League defeat to Brighton and Hove Albion on Saturday.
Neal Maupay scored a stoppage time winner against Arsenal leaving Mikel Arteta furious with his players performances.
The Gunners went ahead early at Amex Stadium through a sublime Nicolas Pepe strike but were stunned by goals from Lewis Dunk and Neal Maupay.
Dunk first leveled things after a tussle which saw him scramble the ball past the line after a fast Brighton corner, before a 95th-minute winner from Maupay, who was involved in an earlier collision that saw Gunners goalkeeper Bernd Leno stretchered out.
It was Arsenal’s second defeat during a week following their 3-0 loss to Manchester City on Wednesday and Arteta was faraway from proud of the way they did not hold onto their earlier advantage. Arteta said he was not pleased with the way the players played. Saying they were too relaxed after opening the scoring.
“We love to compete as a team. Despite starting with a young squad, we opened the scoring, but threw away the lead.”
Leno appeared very unhappy with Maupay after the collision which left him with a broken knee before the break. Also, there was a scuffle on the pitch after the final whistle in which the Brighton striker was involved.
Arteta didn’t appear to place blame on Maupay for his goalkeeper’s injury, however he did confirm that the matter looked serious.
“Perhaps Leno was just unfortunate. It’s not our day today, tomorrow might just be for us. It will be unhealthy to blame Maupay for his injury” Arteta said to Footy Area.
Emiliano Martinez, who replaced Leno in goal, also criticised his team-mates for “switching off” at the worst moments.
Emiliano told the press that “it was a terrible game all-round, and we have so much work to do”
He added on Leno: “I spoke to him at half time and he felt he twisted his knee. As a valuable goalkeeper to us, it is indeed a huge loss”
“Maupay never wanted to injure him. He just happened to chase the ball like any striker would do in football. It can happen to anyone.”
This will make it the fourth time since taking over the team that Arteta blasts Arsenal for poor performances that lead to their defeat.
