The 2020-21 Premier League campaign kicked off this weekend and we bring to you a roundup of the weekend fixtures.
There was plenty of action this weekend with few surprises as the 2020-21 Premier League season kicked off.
Liverpool 4-3 Leeds United
Mohamed Salah grabbed a hat-trick, including two penalties, as Liverpool emerged victors in a thrilling match at Anfield.
Hat-trick hero Mohamed Salah was the man of the moment for Liverpool after newly promoted Leeds gave the champions a huge scare in a 4-3 thriller on match day one of the Premier League season.
The Egyptian winger scored a decisive 88th-minute spot-kick, his second penalty of the game at Anfield, to ensure last season’s champions began the new campaign on a winning note.
In a match up between last season’s Premier League and Championship champions, Salah’s first two goals and one from Virgil van Dijk were replied by Leeds’ from Jack Harrison, Patrick Bamford and Mateusz Klich.
The game between the champions looked destined to end as a draw, until Rodrigo fell Fabinho, allowing Salah to fire home and win the game.
Liverpool were given a penalty in the third minute when Salah’s shot hit the right arm of Leeds debutant Robin Koch. Salah took charge from 12 yards and fired his penalty high into the net, down the middle.
A superb leveller from Leeds came in the 12th minute after Kalvin Phillips fed Harrison on the left. Harrison moved infield, slipping past Trent Alexander-Arnold, before finishing past Alisson from the edge of the penalty area.
The hosts went in front in the 20th minute when Van Dijk drew away from Koch and headed in Andy Robertson’s delivery from the left.
Leeds goalkeeper Illan Meslier made a fine stop to spare Pascal Struijk’s blushes after tipping over a deflected Robertson’s cross which was going in off the defender, and the visitors pegged the hosts back for a second time when Bamford seized on a error from Van Dijk to slot in.
Salah put Liverpool 3-2 in front in the 33rd minute of a frantic first half. With Robertson’s free-kick into the middle of the penalty area partially cleared, Liverpool’s Egyptian attacker was afforded enough space and time to pick out the top right corner with a well-placed shot.
With his first-half strikes, Salah became the first Liverpool player to have a goal on the opening day of four consecutive Premier League campaigns, and only the second player from any club to do so, after Teddy Sheringham’s streak from 1992-93 to 1995-96.
Leeds gave record signing Rodrigo his debut with half an hour remaining, and he would be involved later on, but it was Klich who levelled for the third time in the game in the 66th minute.
He received a clever pass into the penalty area from Helder Costa on the right flank and fired a shot into the left corner. Leeds looked set to go away with a point, only to go behind so late.
Liverpool will travel to Chelsea on Sunday, while Leed meet Hull City in the EFL Cup on Wednesday.
West Brom 0-3 Leicester
Last season’s Golden Boot winner converted two spot-kick in the 74th and 84th minutes at the Hawthorns, after debutant Timothy Castagne put Brendan Rodgers’ side in front early in the second half.
Right-back Castagne headed in a smartly delivered cross from Dennis Praet for the 56th-minute opener, before Vardy was fouled by Kyle Bartley and struck his first penalty low into the left corner.
The Leicester forward converted a second spot-kick for good measure, going the same way after Dara O’Shea tripped James Justin, making it a disappointing first game back in the Premier League for Slaven Bilic’s side.
Vardy has now scored in all five of his Premier League away matches against West Brom, with only Van Nistelrooy having played as many matches against one team in the top-flight and scored each time.
Former Manchester United forward Van Nistelrooy came up against Newcastle five times at St James’ Park, with the Dutchman registering on every visit.
Tottenham 0-1 Everton
Tottenham were totally outplayed by Everton, who gave starts to new signings James Rodriguez, Allan and Abdoulaye Doucoure and might have being in front before Calvert-Lewin’s fine 55th-minute header.
Mourinho’s men could not get back into the game and are already seeking for answers at the start of a massive stretch in which they could feature in as many as nine matches before the October international break.
Everton were gifted a huge opportunity to take the lead after 16 minutes as Ben Davies’ wayward crossfield pass evaded Toby Alderweireld and the alert Richarlison pounced on it.
The Brazil forward went round Hugo Lloris but, failed to hit his effort on target, from a narrow angle, after choosing to ignore Calvert-Lewin in the center.
Jordan Pickford saved twice to keep the visitors’ in the game, tipping Dele Alli’s shot over the top and saving an effort from Matt Doherty, while James fired a 20-yard effort wide.
Mourinho brought on Moussa Sissoko for Alli at half-time, but Tottenham went behind 10 minutes after the break as Calvert-Lewin towered over Eric Dier with a brilliant header from Lucas Digne’s free-kick.
Richarlison twice curled attempts beyond the right-hand post, yet the lone goal proved enough as Spurs struggled at the other end in a disappointing early loss.
Tottenham face Lokomotiv Plovdiv in the Europa League qualifying round on Thursday, while Everton take on Salford City in the EFL Cup on Wednesday.
The first round of fixtures will roundup on Monday when Sheffield United take on Wolverhampton Wanderers, while Chelsea take on Brighton at Stamford Bridge.
Fulham 0-3 Arsenal
Crystal Palace 1-0 Southampton
Liverpool 4-3 Leeds
West Ham 0-2 Newcastle
West Brom 0-3 Leicester
