Luca Toni has urged former club Juventus to give Paul Pogba as a gift to Andrea Pirlo to cement his arrival as new manager.
Paul Pogba would be the “best gift” for Andrea Pirlo following his appointment as Juventus manager according to former Juventus player Luca Toni.
Pogba won eight major trophies in four seasons with Juventus, winning three of those trophies playing alongside Pirlo before returning to Manchester United in 2016.
Pogba was strongly linked with a move back to Juventus last year and is now in the final season of his United contract, though there is an option to extend his contract by 12 months.
Retired striker Toni, who played alongside Pirlo at both club and international level, believes Paul Pogba would be the best signing to mark a new era at Juventus.
“Knowing Andrea very well, he will start his re-building from midfield,” he told Tuttosport. “The best gift would be Paul [Pogba]. I don’t know if it’s going to be possible, but it would surely be the best thing for him.
“Andrea [Pirlo] will not play a boring defending and counter-attacking style. As a player he loved to dominate the ball, and that is what he will want to impose on his team.
“I do not also know what tactics he will use and I don’t think it also matters, all I know is that Andrea is intelligent and flexible.”
Pirlo was named Juventus head coach last Saturday, a few hours after Maurizio Sarri’s was shown the door after crashing out of the Champions League round of 16.
Fabio Capello has also tipped Pirlo to replicate the success Antonio Conte brought to Juventus, but Luca Toni thinks Pirlo is more similar to Pep Guardiola.
“Judging by character, he is similar to Guardiola,” he said.
“But in terms of man management, he has had the privilege to have learned from the two best: [Carlo] Ancelotti and [Max] Allegri.
“All though experiences are useful, in the end he will be himself. He will be Andrea Pirlo, and he will do his own thing. He will not try to copy anyone”
