Donny Van de Beek joins Manchester United

United have completed the signing of Netherlands international Donny van de Beek for a fee of €39m(£35m), with a further €5m to come in add ons.

While the midfielder has previously been touted by the Old Trafford side, United increased their interest in recent weeks and have now completed the deal for the Ajax star.

He has signed a five-year deal with an option for a further year. Van de Beek brings more proven quality to Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s midfield options. The midfield reinforcement which will add more depth will also be another plus for the Norwegian in what is expected to be a congested and hectic season for Manchester United.

Bruno Fernandes and Paul Pogba are United’s two key performers in the midfield, so Van de Beek’s arrival may mean added opportunities to rest the pair, while he will also fight for playing time with Nemanja Matic, Fred and Scott McTominay. It may also push Jesse Lingard and Andreas Pereira closer to an Old Trafford exit.

A quality passer of the ball and a tireless midfielder, Van De Beek scored 11 goals during the 2017/18 Eredivisie season before his Ajax side went on a memorable Champions League run before bowing out to eventual runners-up in the semi-finals. He also scored goals against Juventus and Tottenham in the Champions League knockout stages.

Donny Van De Beek made 175 first-team appearances for Ajax netting 41 times in that period. The 23-year-old has ten caps to his name at senior level for the Netherlands, coming on as a substitute twice against England and Portugal en route to the Nations League final in 2019. He was also named on the 2019 Ballon d’Or shortlist on the back of Ajax’s remarkable Champions League campaign.

Donny Van De Beek becomes the first recruit to arrive Old Trafford in the summer transfer window.

Manchester United have confirmed the Dutch midfielder will wear the number 34 shirt in tribute to his former Ajax colleague Abdelhak Nouri, who was diagnosed with brain damage after a heart attack during a pre-season friendly match in 2017.

He will be available for Manchester United’s opening fixture of the 2020-21 Premier League season against Crystal Palace on 19 September.
