Manchester City have completed the transfer of Ruben Dias from Benfica, the club has confirmed.
The Portuguese international has penned down a six-year deal which will keep him at the Etihad till 2026 and will wear the number 3 shirt.
The 23-year-old becomes the latest transfer addition after Ferran Torres and Nathan Ake arrived at the Etihad this summer, and is the latest huge-money defensive reinforcement recruited by manager Pep Guardiola.
Nicolas Otamendi has also made a move in the opposite direction for a separate fee of £14m ($17m).
According to SkySports, The deal for Ruben Dias is worth an initial £62m, with an additional £3m in add-ons, and was confirmed in a statement released by Benfica on Sunday night following City’s 5-2 loss at home to Leicester.
Having emerged as one of the most promising central defenders in Europe, Dias admitted his delight at joining a fantastic club like Manchester City.
Pep Guardiola had been on the lookout for a right sided center-back, since former captain Vincent Kompany departed in May 2019.
Dias made more than 100 outings in three seasons for the Lisbon club, winning a league title in 2018/19.
A graduate of the famed Benfica academy, which also developed new club and international team-mates and Bernardo Silva and Joao Cancelo.
He was named the Primeira Liga’s best young player in 2017/18.
The following season, he established himself at the heart of defence, featuring 55 times in all competitions and helping Benfica to a 37th league triumph.
Last season, Dias featured 49 times, scoring three goals as he was named in the Primeira Liga Team of the Season.
The 23-year-old has been capped 19 times by Portugal senior side.
Otamendi, meanwhile leaves the Citizens five years after arriving from Valencia, where he had established himself as one of Europe’s top defenders.
The 32-year-old made 210 appearances scoring 11 goals in that period.
He also won every major honour in English football, winning two Premier League titles, four League Cups and the FA Cup.
He also won the Community Shield twice.
The highpoint of his City career was in the 2017/18 campaign, with his stellar performances earning him a place on the PFA Team of the Year.
Kalidou Koulibaly had been City’s top priority this summer, but Napoli’s sporting director confirmed the defender will remain at the Serie A club this summer.
Speculations of a move for Sevilla’s Jules Kounde were also rife, with the defender linked with a moved to the Etihad.
City also denied submitting a £78m bid for Athletic Madrid and Uruguayan center-back Jose Gimenez, after the La Liga club’s president claimed he turned down an offer for the defender.
Guardiola’s side will be looking to bounce back from a shameful 5-2 defeat at the hands of Leicester City, when they take on Marcelo Bielsa’s Leeds United on Saturday.
