Kai Havertz penned down a five-year contract with Chelsea.

Chelsea have completed the club-record signing of midfielder Kai Havertz from Bayer Leverkusen.

Kai Havertz left the Germany training camp on Friday to conclude the details and has penned down a five-year contract to put an end to months of speculations regarding his future.

The 21-year-old had been touted by a number of top European clubs after an outstanding season last term, but Chelsea had been at the forefront for his signature for some time.

Havertz was one of Frank Lampard’s transfer priorities this summer, but while the player had agreed terms with the Blues a while ago, talks dragged on as the two sides continued to negotiate the finer details.

However, Chelsea have now finally announced the signing of the Germany international on a long-term deal. The west London club are believed to have paid an initial £72m, potentially rising to £90m with add-ons.

Havertz becomes Chelsea’s seventh recruit to arrive at Stamford Bridge in the summer window, joining Timo Werner, Hakim Ziyech, Ben Chilwell, Thiago Silva and Malang Sarr, and takes their spending to over ¬£200m. 21-year-old Sarr is expected to join Bundesliga side Bayer Leverkusen on loan for the 2020/21 season as a sweetener for the Havertz deal.

Havertz broke into the first-team for Leverkusen back in 2016, and went on to make 150 outings in total for the Bundesliga side, scoring 46 times and setting up a further 31. He became the first teenager to score 17 goals in the Bundesliga as well as reach 50 and 100 appearances in the German top flight.

The versatile midfielder who can also play up front has appeared seven times for the Germany national team, scoring one goal.

Following a fourth-place finish last term, Chelsea will be expected to mount a serious title challenge for the upcoming 2020-21 campaign, as well as the Champions League. Chelsea will kick off their Premier League campaign with a trip to Brighton on 14 September.
