Barcelona president Josep Maria Bartomeu has plainly confirmed that a sack letter has been mailed to Head coach Quique Setién on Monday morning, with an official statement expected on their website in the coming hours.
Setien endured a painful end to the campaign, watching Barca lose their LaLiga title to fierce rivals Real Madrid, with Bartomeu initially declaring publicly that Setién would get another season to redeem himself.
However, that announcement was made before the humiliating 8-2 demolition from Bayern Munich, after which rumors came up suggesting Setién’s days at Camp Nou were over.
Bartomeu in a press conference with COPE was asked about the future of Quique Setien, and he went on to say “Quique is done”, without answering further questions about the matter..
The only thing left at this moment is an official statement on Barcelona’s website confirming Bartomeu’s statement, putting an end to Setién’s horror at the Camp Nou.
Current Netherlands boss Ronald Koeman has been tipped by pundits as the frontrunner to replace Setién at Barca, with Mauricio Pochettino, Xavi and Massimiliano Allegri also on the shortlist of managers for Barcelona.
Finalising a deal for Koeman seems to be the most reasonable option at the moment, due a clause in his current contract with the Dutch national team that would allow him go for free.
There is so much chaos in the Nou Camp these days, with fan favorite Lionel Messi also agitating for a move away from the club this summer, with fans and players also calling for the retirement of Josep Bartomeu.
With Bartomeu confirming that the club directors and stakeholders would hold a “serious” meeting on Monday to decide the immediate future of the club, a lot of things are at stake, especially the futures of both himself and Lionel Messi.
Bartomeu has come under criticism in recent times for his poor ability to negotiate deals for players who do not perform well, with Ousmane Dembele, Coutinho, and Antoine Griezmann the main reason for the criticism.
Former Barca midfielder, Xavi, has announced he would only consider taking over the job if Bartomeu is no longer in charge of activities at the Camp Nou.
Barcelona sack Quique Setién only after one year in charge, making him the shortest serving manager in their recent history.
