Pep Guardiola has advised his Manchester City players that failure to turn dominance in games into goals and making costly mistakes will hurt them if repeated against Arsenal and Real Madrid.
Manchester City fell to a shock 1-0 defeat to Southampton on Sunday, their ninth loss in the Premier League this season leaving them 23 points below champions Liverpool.
Che Adams lobbed goalkeeper Ederson from 40 yards out after City lost possession and despite 26 shots from Man City, only six of them were on target.
Pep Guardiola feels that heavy mistakes, and his side being unable to take their chances when they dominate games has proven to be damaging for Manchester City this season.
He insists there is no room for mistakes anymore, as they prepare for key upcoming matches against Arsenal and Real Madrid in the FA Cup semi final and Champions League round of 16 second leg tie.
‘We played very well in terms of what we wanted to do, the commitment with the players after two or three successful seasons is still undoubtable,’ Guardiola said.
‘But we tend to make some certain mistakes that costs us a goal, or we fail to score in other games, and most times, a lack of goals costs us a win.
‘In the semi final against Arsenal, and in our match against Real Madrid, if we play the way have been playing, there is a good chance we would go through to the next rounds.
‘But if what happened against Southampton, and the game against Tottenham at home home and away, or Norwich away, where we dropped vital points, we will be kicked out, and Arsenal and Real Madrid will go through.
‘But I do not have any doubts that the team will compete like we have always done. That is my feeling. We still have incredible titles to fight for.’
Pep Guardiola acknowledged that a lack of consistency from his City team compared to league winners Liverpool was what really set Manchester City back.
