Manchester City again came short against a defiant Lyon side in the Champions League as a controversial 3-1 defeat saw Pep Guardiola fail to set up a semi-final clash against his former employers Bayern Munich.
Manchester City started the game with five defenders dumping their usual 4-3-3 formation, with Fernandinho partnered alongside Eric Garcia and Aymeric Laporte in central defence and Kyle Walker and Joao Cancelo as wing-backs.
Maxwel Cornet opened the scoring midway through the first half as City struggled to get to grips with the five-man defence.
The formation was abandoned after 60 minutes of play and De Bruyne equalised in the 69th minute after being set up by Raheem Sterling. The Citizens steadily began to grow in control and were unlucky not to capitalise when Gabriel Jesus mishit a shot after being picked out by Sterling.
Lyon then took the lead at the other end of the pitch moments after Sterling missed a sitter, with substitute Moussa Dembele slotting home after a contentious counterattack with 11 minutes remaining and the goal standing after a VAR check.
Dembele put the final nail in the coffin as he added another goal after Ederson failed to keep the ball out of the danger area with 3 minutes of normal time left.
Manchester City were condemned to another Champions League misery as they once again failed to move past the quarter-final stage against Lyon, who had previously won away to City in the 2018-19 group stage and also drawing at home.
Olympique Lyonnais will now meet Bayern Munich in the Semi-finals of the competition.
