Manchester United forward Anthony Martial has explained the reasons behind his stellar form for Manchester United in 2019/20.
Anthony Martial hailed the trust of manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and increased game time as the reason behind his stellar form in the 2019/20 season.
Martial ended the 2019/20 campaign as Manchester United’s leading scorer with 23 goals across all competitions, one ahead of teammate Marcus Rashford.
The French international scored 17 goals in the Premier League to help Man United finish third and qualify for the Champions League, while he scored four more during the club’s run to the Europa League semi-finals.
The 2019/20 season was Martial’s best goalscoring season for Man United since arriving from Monaco in 2015 and he has credited Solskjaer for his best form at Old Trafford.
“My form last season is simply down to the fact that I played many more games consistently, compared to other seasons.” Martial, who was regularly in and out of the team under former manager Jose Mourinho, told Inside United magazine.
“If you look back at my struggles in previous years, I haven’t been able to feature regularly. I would find myself on the bench for a few weeks, and other times, I would be starting. It was difficult.
“Now however, I know the manager has trust in me to start me in every game, and I’m willing to give my all in each game to repay that faith.
“I am very hungry to score goals. Be it simple tap-ins, or penalties, or stunners, I want to score a lot more than even the previous season.
“I try to replicate all our hardwork in training in a real match situation.”
In addition to being United’s top scorer, Martial also finished as Man Utd’s top assists provider alongside Rashford.
“Playing alongside Marcus for five years has given us a much needed understanding, yes, we enjoy that connection on the pitch,” added Martial.
“We just try to help each other out, for example, there are instances where I have the chance to shoot, but I look up an Rashy is better placed, and I give him the ball because I want him to score, and he does the same thing for me.
“We have also decided between us to always pass to the better placed teammate so that we score a lot of goals.
“We have a very good relationship, Marcus and I, and we try to bring that positive atmosphere into the pitch. We have a healthy competition which helps us to perform better for the team.”
