Luke Shaw needs to take full advantage of Reguilon’s failed transfer

Manchester United made a firm decision not to agree to Real Madrid’s unfair demands for Sergio Reguilon and give a chance to Luke Shaw.

Reguilon is currently headed to Tottenham, The Guardian report, after the North London agreed to insert a buy-back clause for Real Madrid.

Manchester United cleverly refused this treachery, which would effectively have made such a transfer an extended and expensive loan.

It is highly doubtful now that Man United will pursue another left-back this summer, leaving Luke Shaw and Brandon Williams with another chance to prove themselves once again.

To me, the reason behind Ole’s pursuit of Sergio Reguilon never quite made sense, and that is Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s outspoken affection and loyalty for Luke Shaw.

Luke Shaw was someone whom Ole selected all through United’s unbeaten run in 2020 whenever he was available.

Reguilon’s arrival would have definitely moved Shaw down the pecking order at Old Trafford. Luckily for him, he now has one last chance to see this opportunity and prove his quality.

For me, I believe Shaw has control over one of the two ways he can do this.

The one way which he can prove his class, which is totally in his control is his performances on the pitch.

Shaw needs to to start making decisive and game changing impacts in the final third. In short, his performances need to start beaming of high quality.

In the recent friendly loss to Aston Villa, Shaw showed a little bit of desire to get forward and link up well with Marcus Rashford.

Man United need him to start showing that attacking intent going forward henceforth.

Last season, despite the regular game time, Shaw scored only one goal, in the FA Cup against Derby County.

He was so poor in his goal contribution also, managing only one assist all season against a weak Astana in the Europa League.

Shaw certainly has to do better from now on. Other smaller teams in Europe have full-backs who make more compelling contributions.

Even with the criticism directed towards towards Aaron Wan-Bissaka’s attacking game, the young right-back still managed four Premier League assists for United in 2019/20 despite him being a defensive type of full-back.

The second aspect and the most crucial one, is if Luke Shaw can just stay fit. For the love of Christ!!!

He had two spells on the sidelines due to injury last season, playing just 24 out of 38 Premier League games, missing both the FA Cup and Europa League semi-finals.

It is now in Shaw’s nature to always get injured, but this season, he really needs a change.

If he cannot stay fit, then there is extra pressure on 20-year-old Brandon Williams as back-up.

Shaw needs to answer these two issues to keep his spot for next season. He got away with it this summer, and some would say he has earned that with his recent performances.

But in order to keep United out of the transfer market for a left-back in 2021, Shaw has to kick on this season.
