Barcelona may need to start preparing for a future without Lionel Messi as he has now told the club’s hierarchy he wants to leave.
Lionel Messi has sensationally told his Barcelona employers he wants to leave the club this summer.
Barca captain Messi, whose current contract runs until the summer of June 2021, is said to have a strange clause in his current deal that allowed him to leave on a free transfer at the end of the 2019-20 campaign if he wished.
However, that horrible clause was required to be activated before the end of May but, due to the season being extended into August because the Covid-19 pandemic, the six-time Ballon d’Or winner has told the Catalan giants he still desires to make use of it.
Messi sat down with new head coach Ronald Koeman last week to discuss the future plans of the club.
The 33-year-old captain reportedly told Koeman he has decided to leave the Camp Nou and Stats Perform News confirms he has cemented his decision after the ill treatment given to his best friend Luis Suarez, after Suarez was recently told he was no longer required at the Catalan club.
In response to the news of Messi’s reaction to the poor treatment given to Suarez, Barca legend Carles Puyol tweeted: “Respect and admiration, Leo. All my support, friend.”
Suarez then replied to Puyol’s tweet with an applause emoji.
Having spent all of his professional career with Barcelona, Lionel Messi has been linked with a possible return to Argentina to play for his boyhood club Newell’s Old Boys in his hometown of Rosario.
However, sources claim a reunion with former Barca boss Pep Guardiola at Manchester City is very likely, while the links to Inter who have been long-term admirers could also be a possibility. According to TyC Sports, a move to the MLS could also be on the plate.
Lionel Messi is Barcelona’s all-time leading goalscorer with 634 goals and 276 assists in 731 appearances across all competitions for the club.
The Argentina international made his first team debut as a 17-year-old in 2004 and has won 34 trophies and 6 Ballon d’Or titles at Barcelona.
He had looked set to add to that impressive trophy cabinet when Barca sat two points clear at the top of LaLiga when the season was suspended in March due to COVID-19.
However, Barcelona let their advantage slip and ended up finishing five points behind the eventual champions Real Madrid.
Sporting director Eric Abidal was sacked immediately after humiliating 8-2 Champions League defeat to Bayern, while Messi has made up his mind to leave the club
