Barcelona coach Quique Setien

Quique Setien expects to remain at Barcelona next season as their coach despite the title already looking lost to arch rivals Real Madrid.

Barcelona look set to lose out on the title this year, but Quique Setien does not think that should cost him his place as coach.

Setien replaced Ernesto Valverde in January and was appointed on a three year contract. His possession based brand of football was thought to be a good fit for the clubs philosophy after fans grew frustrated with his Ernesto Valverde.

But the former Real Betis manager has not been able to inspire the kind of football most fans hoped for, while recent drawn matches with Celta Vigo and Atletico Madrid at the end of June seems to have cost them the title.

Barcelona are four points behind Real Madrid, who will lift the title on Thursday if they are able to defeat Villarreal at the Estadio Alfredo Di Stefano.

Barcelona legend Xavi has been frequently linked with a return to Catalonia as a coach, though Quique Setien believes it will still be him at the job next term.

‘This not the first time I have passed through such a situation, I still see myself here as the manager come next season.’ He told reporters.

‘But I must say the work I have done must be acknowledged. Although all the expectations have not been met yet.

‘I feel I should be assessed by this, and I earnestly look forward to next year’s continuation.’

Regarding the seemingly imminent loss of the LaLiga title, he continued: ‘All the blame I not left to me, of course, I will take my own part of the blame.’

‘It is not fair to always make a scape goat of the coach. Such assessment is never fair. Drawing three games since the restart is not so bad, instead more credit should go to Real Madrid for winning all theirs.’

Luis Suarez has already voiced out his defeat in the title race publicly, though Quique Setien is hoping Madrid will slip up.

‘That is his [Suarez] opinion. It is not over because anything can happen, but it is also very difficult,’ Setien said.

‘Real Madrid have obviously done better because they have won all eight games since the restart. It is also possible that a circumstance can arise where we can win the title. We will keep on fighting until the end.’
