After leading his team to their first title in 30 years, Jordan Henderson has won the FWA Footballer of the Year award for 2019/20 season.
Liverpool skipper Jordan Henderson has been awarded the Football Writers’ Association’s FWA Footballer of the Year title after easily beating Man City star Kevin De Bruyne and Leicester City forward Jamie Vardy to the award.
The Reds won the league with as much as seven games left, ending a 30-year title drought and winning their 19th league trophy.
The Liverpool captain has been instrumental to their title exploits this season, becoming one of the first names on the team sheet for Klopp.
It came as no surprise that the FWA revealed Henderson won the award by a mile after leading by over a quarter of the total votes.
Fellow team-mates Virgil van Dijk and Sadio Mane were also in contention to win the accolade, along with Manchester City midfielder Kevin De Bruyne and Manchester United striker Marcus Rashford.
Henderson said in a news conference: “I would like to say how grateful I am to those who supported and voted for me, as well as the Football Writers’ Association body in general.
“If you look at the past winners of this trophy, a number of whom I have been privileged to play alongside with here, like Steven Gerrard, Luis Suarez and Mo Salah, you would know how revered it is.
“However, I owe whatever I’ve achieved to my teammates, I don’t think I did this by myself, these lads I play with made me much better than I am. The gaffer also pushes me a lot.
“I owe everything to my buddies on the pitch. They deserve all the credit here and not me.

“We’ve been able to achieve all this and to make history because every single one of them has been brilliant all season.”
Henderson who joined Liverpool for £20million from Sunderland in the summer of 2011, has scored four goals in 30 league appearances this campaign.
And as much as he helped his club win the Premier League, he also helped them lift the Champions league, UEFA Super Cup and the Club World Cup trophy
His tenacity on the pitch was not his only strength, as he was just as instrumental off the pitch when he was also a key player in the setting up of the #PlayersTogether initiative in England, a fund raiser for Premier League players to raise money for the NHS workers during the coronavirus pandemic.
