German Bundesliga to lose over €150m of broadcast revenue

German Bundesliga and Bundesliga 2 are going to lose €150m in broadcast revenue for the 2020/21 season, partly due to EuroSport pulling off its €70m deal with the leagues.

The top two divisions of Germany’s football returned to full action on 16th of May, after a two month layoff due to the coronavirus pandemic.

However, all matches will be played behind closed doors, which results in a fall in matchday broadcast revenue, and although the German Bundesliga was the first top league in Europe to resume, their clubs are doomed to suffer a loss in broadcast income for the next season.

Reports from German news outlet Kicker claims that the German Bundesliga and Bundesliga 2 will only receive €1.2bn from a supposed revenue of €1.35bn from broadcast deals next season.

The DFL’s Financial body has sent out a letter last Friday with these results. The drop in earnings means the league will lose €150m in national viewing rights.

Already, €51m has been shared among the 36 teams in the top two tiers, with an added €200m to be issued when the season is completed.

Several Deutsch Football league partners have failed to meet their payment obligations due to the Pandemic.

EuroSport has therefore cut off its partnership deal with the Bundesliga following the league’s enforced break, exercising a unique termination clause in their contract with the league.

The DFL officials claimed that their finances ‘may still reduce due to contract terminations’.

DFL’s Finance Commission have now written to the Bundesliga and Bundesliga 2 teams, asking them to make sure that proper health and hygiene provisions are in place to enable games to continue being broadcasted.

Bundesliga’s title race is still far from over, with Bayern Munich closing in on their eighth consecutive trophy, haviang already stretched their lead further at the top.
