Ansu Fati made history on his first full debut and Sergio Ramos scored a brace as Spain cruised to a 4-0 victory over Ukraine in Sunday’s Nations League fixture in Madrid.
Barcelona star Fati, who made his international debut for the senior team off the bench in Thursday’s 1-1 draw with Germany, netted the third of the night in fine fashion just before half-time at Estadio Alfredo Di Stefano to become Spain’s youngest goalscorer at 17 years and 311 days old.
Fati had earlier won his side the penalty from which Ramos converted to open the scoring and the Real Madrid Captain doubled the lead at a familiar surrounding, which is part of Los Blancos’ Valdebebas training complex.
Ferran Torres had his first goal for La Roja with a well-controlled effort six minutes from time as Spain rose to four points from two matches to go top of Group A4. Fati’s quick feet was too much for Sergey Krivtsov to handle in just the third minute, with Andriy Pyatov not able to save Ramos’ spot kick finding the bottom-left corner. The Barca youngster placed a shot just past the right post after causing Oleksandr Tymchyk all sorts of headache on the left flank and had an overhead-kick blocked by Mykola Matvyenko in a goal-mouth scramble.
Ramos had his second to deservedly double the lead with a fine header from Dani Olmo’s delivery before Fati brilliantly left Ihor Kharatin for dead and struck a shot into the bottom-right corner off the post.
Olmo, also making a first start for the senior team, forced a smart save from Pyatov just past the hour, while Gerard Moreno put the ball in the back of the net only for it to be chalked off for offside.
Pyatov again kept the scoreline at a respectable level with a fine fingertip stop from Oscar Rodriguez’s dipping strike but was powerless to stop new Manchester City signing Torres firing a side-footed volley into the bottom-right corner.
Ramos, with the most caps for a Spanish player, will forever be recognized as a Spain legend and his brace means he has now moved to joint-eighth in the nation’s list of highest goalscorers – level with fellow Real Madrid legend Alfredo Di Stefano, after whom the venue was named.
Fati got his first start in international football, but he played with the confidence and swagger of a veteran. He tormented the Ukraine’s defenders time and again and fully deserved his historic goal – becoming the youngest goalscorer for the Spain national team.
Spain prepare for their next Nations League fixture when they host Portugal in a friendly on October 7, while Ukraine meet Germany in their third Group A4 encounter.
