David Beckham’s Inter Miami side beats Orlando City for first win in their club history.
Inter Miami CF had an inaugural home game to remember, earning a 3-2 victory over City rivals Orlando City SC on Saturday night thanks to Julian Carranza’s first two career MLS goals and a second-half goal by Rodolfo Pizarro.
The win was the first for Miami who were previously winless in five attempts, a club in its debut season in MLS. Miami avenged a 2-1 defeat to Orlando in the first game of the MLS is Back Tournament last month.
Fans were prohibited from attending Inter Miami’s home debut on Saturday night due to COVID-19 restrictions, but that didn’t prevent the team’s most ardent fans from gathering on the sidewalk outside the remodeled Fort Lauderdale stadium and serenaded their beloved pink and black before, during and after the game.
Miami got on the board early in their 18,000-seat stadium which was empty except for owners, team staff and reserve players.
Carranza, a 20-year-old Argentine forward took a pass from Pizarro and fired a left-footed finish into the net in the 12th minute.
Daryl Dike, a 20-year-old youngster making his MLS debut, equalized for Orlando City in the 18th minute. His shot, Orlando’s first of the game was initially saved by Miami goalkeeper Luis Robles, and then had his rebound blocked before tucking home the ball at the third time of asking.
Carranza responded with his second goal of the game in the 23rd minute, heading in a delivery from Ben Sweat to give Miami the lead. Pizarro’s goal came just three minutes after the break. A deflected ball arriving to his feet in the box which he duly dispatched.
Pizarro celebrated by jumping over the end boards and into the stands, where he posed for a shot with a cardboard cutout of a young fan.
Orlando City pulled one goal back in the 80th minute with Nani’s header making it a close finish, Miami hanging on to avenge their first meeting where Orlando ran out winners thanks to a 97th minute goal by Nani.
David Beckham’s side finally get their first win in the MLS on their home debut. It wasn’t exactly a home debut the players dreamed of prior to the coronavirus pandemic, with the absence of their fans. Nonetheless, it was their first home game and they made it memorable.
