Chelsea are in touching distance on the signing of Rennes goalkeeper Édouard Mendy, with confirmation of his signing now imminent, according to the player’s agent.

According to Metro, a 22 million (£20.1m) deal has been agreed between the two clubs, with the player set to undergo a medical in the coming days.

The Blues are desperately in need of a shot-stopper to reinforce their ranks this summer following Kepa Arrizabalaga’s poor second season at Stamford Bridge.

The Spaniard’s dismal performances continued during Chelsea’s 2020/21 season opener at Brighton, as he let Leandro Trossard’s relatively tame effort from distance sneak under his arm.

Notwithstanding, Chelsea are set to provide competition for the goalkeeper spot in the form of Rennes shot-stopper Mendy, a target suggested by technical and performance advisor Petr Čech.

The Blues reached an agreement with the French club for the 28-year-old last week and the player’s agent has also confirmed it’s merely a matter of tying up loose ends before Mendy is officially confirmed as a Chelsea player.

Although there are clashing reports over the agreed fee Chelsea will pay for the Frenchman, it seems that director Marina Granovskaia has been able to negotiate a price which falls in the range of Rennes’ initial £30m+ asking price.

Despite Kepa’s poor form, it’s not expected that Mendy will be thrust straight into Frank Lampard’s first team.

The Spaniard has indicated that he intends to stay and prove his worth at the club, with Lampard believed to be enthralled by the Spaniard’s willingness to bounce back from a poor campaign.

Mendy will also have to undergo a mandatory isolation period following his arrival from France due to UK quarantine protocols.

In other news, Chelsea are expected to send out Davide Zappacosta to Genoa, Gianluca Di Mario reports.

The Italian was signed by Antonio Conte in 2017 but has failed to nail down a starting berth in west London.

The 28-year-old is yet to feature under Lampard after spending the entire 2019/20 season out on loan at Roma, where he made just nine Serie A outings.
