Juventus goalkeeper Gianluigi Buffon is set to break defensive legend Paolo Maldini’s Serie A appearance record on Saturday after he was selected to play a 648th Serie A game in the Turin derby versus Torino.
The former Italy number one kept his place in the squad, with Poland’s Wojciech Szczesny named on among the substitutes at the Allianz Stadium.
Buffon, 41, was once the teammate of former Milan defender Paolo Maldini before he retired in 2009 at the age of 40.
Gigi Buffon’s Serie A debut came for Parma in 1995 when he prevented Milan from scoring in a 0-0 draw. However, Milan still went on to win the trophy that season.
Buffon then went on went to join Juventus in 2001 in a £32.6million deal, making him the world’s most expensive goalkeeper at the time.
It turned out to be money well spent as he spent 17 years with Turin giants, even staying at the club during the club’s infamous relegation due Italian football’s Calciopoli scandal, and helping Juventus to seven successive Scudettoes before leaving for Paris Saint-Germain in 2018.
After only one year in France, Buffon returned to Juventus last July, and has been competing with Szczesny for the starting berth in Sarri’s team since then.
Buffon recently signed a new contract to keep him at Juventus for at least another year.
Boffon currently holds the Serie A appearance record for the most appearances with 648 games under his belt.
