Bartomeu has conceded defeat regarding the number or quality of signings Barcelona can bring to the Camp Nou this summer, after confirming to Footy Area that the Covid-19 outbreak has affected their revenue this season.

The Barca President confirmed that they do not have the financial strength at the moment to sign top priority Neymar, as well as Inter striker Lautaro Martinez, claiming it might take as much as six years of economic strain if they go through with those deals.

Prior to the Coronavirus Pandemic, Barcelona had looked ready to make a major move for Lautaro Martinez. However, those dreams are very well beyond their reach now.

Alongside a deal for Lautaro, Barca were also interested in bringing Neymar back to Spain, where he left to join PSG in 2017.

But with the outbreak of the Coronavirus, coupled with the lockdown which led to leagues being suspended, as well as playing behind closed doors when it was deemed safe enough to restart, so many European clubs were damaged financially.

Barcelona have now trashed their interests in both Lautaro Martinez and Neymar, and have turned their attention to bringing up talents from their youth system.

Speaking to news outlet Sport, Barca President Josep Maria Bartomeu said: “We have spoken with Inter about the issue regarding not being able to sign Lautaro [Martinez], everyone understands the issues regarding our finances.

“And regarding Neymar, there’s nothing we can do to bring him here because we all know he has a long term contract at PSG, therefore it will take a very large sum to sign him. In addition to that, they are not willing to sell.

Bartomeu also confirmed that Barca’s income this year was very poor, and the club did not make up to 30% of the expected earnings of €1.1bn for the season.

“If this situation does not improve, no one will visit the museum, the clubs stores, restaurant, parks, and money will continue to be lost.” Bartomeu continued.

“This situation causes us to make certain adjustments so that we don’t suffer on the long run. We are now forced to manage our resources to face only things that are important.”

Barcelona fans would be sad to also find out that those necessary funds cutting have meant that Quique Setien would not be given a huge transfer figure to maneuver himself in the market this summer.

This also means that Barcelona do not have the money to build a team better than the current Real Madrid side, and may see their ten year dominance of the LaLiga slip away to their arch rivals.

“Well, concerning that matter, we can only hope and pray that we can compete and win major trophies with the lads we have here. This is a critical period for football clubs, and it may not even finish in a year, it might go on for as long as four or five years.”
