Barcelona can’t afford to land Memphis Depay due to the hit their finances have taken during the Covid-19 lockdown, Lyon president Jean-Michel Aulas has confirmed.
Memphis Depay appeared ready to be reunited with Ronald Koeman at Barcelona, but that news now appears more impossible after a claim from Lyon.
The dramatic turnaround on Tuesday evening followed earlier reports that Depay was set to be reunited with Ronald Koeman who was previously his Netherlands coach.
The striker looked keen to move to the Spanish giants in a deal which would have cost Barcelona €30m.
Apparently, the deal now appears to be dead, with Aulas saying Barcelona president Josep Maria Bartomeu personally informed him of Barcelona’s inability to make a bid.
Aulas took to Twitter to confirm this news that Barcelona can’t afford to buy Memphis Depay.
In a Twitter message, Aulas referred to a report from Dutch news company De Telegraaf which suggested a €30m move for the Dutchman was in the offing.
According to SBNATION, Bartomeu personally informed Aulas of Barcelona’s poor financial state.
Aulas wrote: “The president of Barca indicated to me on Sunday that Barca were suffering a lot from the COVID crisis and didn’t have the possibility to make an offer. #memphis”
Bartomeu recently said Barcelona currently risk losing more than 30 per cent of their projected income because of the Covid-19 pandemic, with that figure likely to sit somewhere close to €300m.
Memphis Depay has scored 46 goals in 103 LIGUE 1 games since he joined Lyon from United in 2017.
